Salento, the heel of Italy

Salento is known as the ‘heel’ of Italy. It is a vast peninsula in Apulia stretching from Lecce to Capo Santa Maria di Leuca which is located on the southernmost tip of the region.

As the peninsula is narrow, the sea is never far away. In fact this area benefits from a fantastic location between two seas. The Adriatic west coast is dramatic and very picturesque with high rocky cliffs and caves. Also it can be a bit more windy. The crystalline waters of the Ionian sea overlook white sand beaches kissed by baking sun.

A great number of different cultures have left their marks scattered all over the region in the shape of amphitheatres, palaces, castles and impressive churches. In the past this strategically important land has been variously ruled by Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Normans and Spaniards. These multiple layers of history made up a single identity with a special character.
